Regular maintenance is a simple and effective way to keep your dishwasher functioning optimally for years.
And now that we are home a lot more often, it feels good to know that your dishwasher won’t be breaking down any time soon, or knowing if your dishwasher may have future problems.
Not sure where to start? Or have no idea how your dishwasher functions… Here are six tips to get you started.
1) Give it a thorough clean. At least once a month, run an empty dishwasher through a normal cycle with hot water. A tip for doing this is to place a cup of vinegar on the top rack. This will loosen up any grease or soap scum from all the surfaces inside your dishwasher.
2) Wipe it down. Use a cloth to remove remaining bits of food from the bottom of the tour dishwasher after every cycle. This simple routine will prevent a buildup of debris and help keep your dishwasher functioning. Don’t forget to wipe down the edges and exterior of the door!
3) Load it properly. Before you turn on the dishwasher, make sure there are no dishes blocking the path of the spray arms. Overloading a dishwasher decreases it’s efficiency and puts a strain on the machine. It also increases the risk of dishes breaking and damaging the mechanisms, if not loaded optimally. So keep that in mind when loading!
4) Check for clogs. The drain is a commonplace for food scraps to accumulate while dirty water is wet away. In addition to removing large particles after every cycle, take the drain apart every few weeks to check for blockages and clean the components. Sometime’s this can be challenging to do, depending on your dishwasher, so you may need to call a nearby plumber.
5) Check the seal. A dishwasher gasket (The rubber seal that lines tub opening.) It creates a water-hight seal around the door of the appliance. A worn-out or damaged gasket will allow water to leak out of the dishwasher and pool on the floor around the appliances. So make sure you inspect your dishwasher gasket to prevent a potential mess, and water damage to your place!
6) Call a plumber. A malfunctioning could signal plumbing issues, such as a leaky pipe. These types of problems should be dealt with as soon as possible to prevent water damage.
